For weeks before they felt real enough. I really only knew my contractions were real when I timed them one morning and they were so close together. They were then accompanied by so much mucous plug gook, and then blood. I knew when I saw the blood it was real. The plug didn't give me the final clue but did help as it was SO MUCH gook. Sorry so much info, but it's what helped me to know, plus my anxious feeling. You are getting closer if the contractions are getting your attention, that's for sure!
